Campaigners organise gig to support eco-town fight Communities Against Ford Eco-Town (CAFE) have organised an evening of music to generate support for their campaign against an ‘eco-town’ at Ford in West Sussex. The gig will feature American musician David Francis who is currently on tour in the UK, along with Yapton singer-songwriter Jo McCafferty who has toured with the likes of Joe Walsh, Midge Ure and Marillion. The musicians have spoken out against the proposal to build thousands of new houses on the greenfield site, with Mr Francis describing the plan as “monstrous”. David Francis and Jo McCafferty will be performing live at The Lamb Inn, Bilsham Road, Yapton on Saturday 20 September from 8pm. Entry is free and no advance booking is required. Mr Francis, an acoustic guitarist, commented: “When I came to tour England last year, I was enchanted by the natural beauty of Yapton, Ford and Climping, the profusion of wild flowers and beautiful crops blowing gently in an English breeze. To think this could be lost forever makes me weep. “Coming from New York, I know only too well what a disaster this proposed monstrous town could become, that’s why I’m against the destruction of green fields - once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.” CAFE vice-chairman and Yapton resident Vicky Newman commented: “It's fantastic that David and Jo have given up their valuable time to perform at Yapton in aid of CAFE. “David's involvement simply highlights the folly of this scheme. A New Yorker can plainly see that this proposal will not enhance this rural area but cause more problems in terms of transport and facilities. He also cannot relate how we British can justify ruining our precious green fields and turn them into dense housing and soulless urban parkland, while letting our cities and towns continue to deteriorate. “Let's hope the voice of a New Yorker and local girl Jo will enable sense to be heard and the Ford eco-town pulled from this charade of an eco-town process.” CAFE campaigner and Yapton resident John Ricketts commented: “I am absolutely delighted that David Francis has agreed to take time off from his busy UK tour to play at Yapton in support of our campaign. David, like most people in this area, is horrified at the thought of losing this beautiful area of countryside and wants to do what he can to help out.
“We are also very grateful
to Jo McCafferty for agreeing to perform at the gig. It promises to be a
great night and I would urge as many people as possible to come along.” |
